Portugal Emerges as Top Relocation Choice for Americans Seeking a New Life and Investments Abroad

Find out why Portugal was named the number one relocation destination for US citizens in a new survey

Portugal has been named the leading destination for Americans planning to move overseas, according to a comprehensive new survey by Expatsi, a travel platform specialising in relocation. The findings, based on responses from over 116,000 U.S. citizens, highlight Portugal’s rising status as more than just a European holiday favourite—it’s now the top pick for long-term relocation.

The survey ranked countries according to user preferences such as climate, affordability, and language. Portugal claimed the number one position, outperforming other popular options like Spain, the UK, Italy, and New Zealand.

Many respondents cited personal development, a desire for adventure, and growing political and social divisions in the U.S. as key motivations for relocating.

While Portugal has long attracted interest from American expats, its recent surge in popularity is attributed to its high quality of life, accessible residency pathways, and attractive tax policies for newcomers.

A standout factor for many is Portugal’s Golden Visa residency-by-investment programme.

Although the scheme has shifted in recent years—excluding real estate investments as of 2023 in favour of regulated investment funds—it still offers a strategic path to European Union residency. The programme allows applicants to gain residency and, after five years, apply for dual EU citizenship and a passport without the need to live in Portugal full-time during that period.

Portugal’s allowance of dual residency enables Americans to maintain legal residence in both the U.S. and Portugal. This flexibility appeals to those wishing to split their time between the two countries, whether for business, family, or lifestyle reasons.

The advantages are clear: a temperate, sunny climate, celebrated cuisine and wine, a top-tier healthcare system, and secure, culturally rich cities. Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve continue to attract a growing number of international residents, reinforcing the country’s reputation as an expat-friendly hub.

Paul Stannard, chairman and founder of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club, noted:

"Portugal is uniquely positioned as an ideal investment destination with its vibrant culture and growing international reputation for investment and relocation.

“For HNWIs, affluent families, and institutional investors, the combination of economic stability, tax incentives, and market growth projections in key sectors of its economy makes Portugal a compelling proposition."

As more Americans consider life beyond their borders, Portugal shines not only as a desirable travel destination, but as a welcoming, secure place to build a new chapter.
