Portugal tourist accommodation revenue grows 4.6% in August

Find out the latest on Portugal's tourism sector as accommodation revenue grows

Revenue from Portugal's tourist accommodation sector reached €1.1 billion in August, a rise of 4.6% compared with the same month last year, according to a flash estimate published by the national statistics office, INE. The figure grew faster than either guest numbers or overnight stays, pointing to higher spending per visitor as well as continued growth in volume.

Guest numbers increased 1.9% to 3.9 million in August, while total overnight stays rose 1.7% to 10.9 million. The growth came from both domestic and international travellers. Resident overnight stays were up 1.5% to 3.9 million, while non-resident stays rose 1.9% to 7 million, an acceleration from the 0.8% growth recorded in July.

The UK remained Portugal's largest source of foreign visitors, representing 17.1% of non-resident overnight stays and recording growth of 3.4%. Spain held second place with a 15.6% share and a 5% increase. France, the third-largest market, posted a third consecutive monthly decline, with overnight stays down 7.6%.

Poland and Canada were the fastest-growing foreign markets, with overnight stays up 11.7% and 11.2% respectively. Portugal's ten largest foreign markets together accounted for 79.2% of non-resident overnight stays in August. The Netherlands was the only other major market to record a fall, down 1.1%.

The Algarve remains Portugal's most popular tourist destination

Regionally, the North posted the strongest growth in overnight stays, up 4.5%, ahead of Alentejo on 2.6%. The Algarve remained Portugal's leading destination overall, accounting for 30.1% of overnight stays, ahead of Greater Lisbon on 19.3% and the North on 18.2%.

"These figures reflect the continued strength of Portugal's tourism sector, with growth now extending into newer source markets and regions beyond the traditional hotspots," said Paul Stannard, chairman and founder of Portugal Pathways and the Portugal Investment Owners Club. "It's further evidence of the broader economic stability that continues to underpin Portugal's appeal to international investors and those considering relocation here."
