Find out how Portugal's popular tourism sector contributed to the country's wider economy last year
Portugal's tourism industry has once again broken records, contributing an estimated €36.2 billion—11.8% of national GDP—in 2025, according to the Tourism Satellite Account published by Statistics Portugal (INE). This marks a robust 5.3% increase on 2024, underlining the sector's continued strength as a pillar of the national economy.
Tourism's contribution to Gross Value Added was equally impressive, reaching €30.4 billion, or 11.4% of GVA, up 5.5% year-on-year. These figures confirm that tourism remains one of the most valuable and dynamic engines of economic activity in Portugal, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs across hospitality, transport, retail and property.
Encouragingly, tourism also continues to add to Portugal's real GDP growth every single year without exception—a testament to the sector's resilience and enduring appeal to international visitors. Since the extraordinary rebound of 2022, when pent-up travel demand pushed tourism's contribution to a striking 3.6 percentage points of that year's 7.0% GDP growth, the wider Portuguese economy has been steadily diversifying, which is itself a positive sign of maturity and balance.

As the post-pandemic recovery settled in 2023, tourism contributed 1.2 percentage points to GDP growth of 3.1%. In 2024 and 2025, its share moderated further, adding 0.4 percentage points to 2.2% growth and 0.3 percentage points to 1.9% growth respectively. Rather than a weakness, this reflects a healthy broadening of Portugal's growth base, with other sectors now sharing more of the load alongside tourism—precisely the kind of balanced expansion that supports long-term economic stability.
Crucially, this moderation in tourism's share of growth has come without any loss of momentum in the sector itself. Tourism revenues keep climbing to new highs each year, and consumption remains worth tens of billions of euros annually—clear evidence that visitor demand for Portugal shows no signs of slowing.
Looking ahead, tourism is well placed to keep building on this success. With record earnings, strong year-on-year growth and an increasingly diversified economy around it, Portugal's tourism sector continues to reinforce its position as a cornerstone of national prosperity, and a driving force behind the country's global appeal.
